Securing a territory in DayZ is one of the most vital tasks for long-term survival in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. While base building allows players to construct secure compounds, keeping items from despawning requires a functional flag pole. Understanding the essential materials and step-by-step assembly process ensures your hard-earned loot remains safe indefinitely.

Essential Gathering Phase for Flag Construction

Before beginning construction, players must gather several key resources across the map. The process requires ten wooden logs, thirty-two large stones, sixty nails, two ropes, one metal wire, and three short sticks. Essential tools include a sledgehammer, a shovel or pickaxe, and a hatchet or hammer to complete each assembly phase.

While most construction components can be crafted or gathered from nature, acquiring an actual flag requires exploration. Flags cannot be crafted by hand and must be looted from specific urban locations like city halls, schools, or general stores.

Deploying the Flag Pole Kit and Base Log

The first step in construction is creating the flag pole kit by combining three short sticks with a rope. Place the kit on a flat surface within your base area to designate the center of your territory. Next, insert one wooden log into the kit position and use a sledgehammer to drive the base foundation firmly into the ground.

Building the Stone Support and Main Mast

Once the base log is set, you must reinforce the structure using stone and heavy timber. Transport six wooden logs and thirty-two large stones directly into the base inventory, then complete the support phase using a shovel or pickaxe. This creates a heavy foundation that holds the entire pole structure stable against harsh weather and player interference.

To construct the main mast, add three final wooden logs, sixty nails, one metal wire, and a second rope to the structure. Equip a hammer or hatchet to assemble the final pole and hoist mechanism.

Hoisting the Flag and Managing Base Persistence

With the structure complete, attach your chosen flag to the bottom of the pole and interact with the mechanism to hoist it to the top. Raising the flag establishes a 60-meter protection radius that refreshes the persistence timer of all nearby storage containers and structures.

Flags gradually slide lower over forty-five days, requiring survivors to revisit their base regularly to pull the hoisting rope. Keeping the flag fully raised guarantees your base will remain active and protected from world despawn cycles.
